poppyseedheartWe are back and better than ever! Let's do some extended a/n for chapter five which I am literally about to post. Things go down in this one! As ever this contains spoilers for the chapter so I'd recommend going to read that first if you haven't yet.
So, this chapter contains one of my orienting scenes for the entire story! In this fic, the midpoint was Changbin and Felix breaking up. [sad horns] This was really important though — they were never going to be an endgame ship, but their relationship is super closely tied to Hyunjin's own extreme denial of the idea that he could ever do harm. We're about halfway through the wordcount as well, as this chapter tips us over 50k (wow!), and things needed to take some turns. Hyunjin's relationships are not as perfect as he thought. His mysterious suitor has best friend baggage. His childhood friend didn't behave the way Hyunjin expected or needed him to. Hyunjin isn't ready for a wake up call necessarily, but he is ready for things to stop going exactly his way.
I use the midpoint a lot with longer stories to help me identify a major turning point. I like writing with symmetry when I can. This story loves a parallel so it's been fun to utilize this scene as a point on a map and build around it. I didn't do a perfect job but I still found it useful.
Most extensive rewrites this chapter came in the dinner with Minsung scene, which scanned a lot choppier during my first couple drafts. I was giggling at a couple of commenters being like hmm, I didn't think Hyunsung would get along but I guess I was wrong. Fear not. We made it to the tumult, and there's more to come.
I also had to full rework a description of Hyunjin's outfit in the Prada event scene because I am a CLOWN and the one I had in mind was from when his hair was black irl. So we ended up doing Arena magazine shots instead. It wasn't a hardship to look them up lmao these guys are just beautiful so that was fine, I just felt like a fool for not even thinking about hair color when I'm usually good about triple checking that.
The other place I changed some things was just adding Hyunjin's little rant about the drama he was watching into the Changbin Felix Hyunjin lunch scene. I feel like it's such a classic to have fiction within fiction that echoes its themes blatantly. Also I needed that scene to feel just a little bit longer/more substantial because the pacing was wonky. Why is the pacing always wonky. It's because I sprinted my way through most of this story's first draft.
Anyway that's the gist! Not a ton of research or specifics went into this chapter, most of the scenes just continued on storylines we've already been looking at, and that theme will continue.
