merry than wise chapter 3 AND 4 extended author's notes

Wow! Long time no extended a/n. That's not really true it's only been two weeks. But hey I'm here to tell you in shortish form about the last couple of chapters! I don't have thaaaat much to say mostly because I'm tired but I'm hopeful that if I sit down and start writing this the words will come and you'll get to hear all about how the revision process went.

Also, twitter is fully down as I type this, so I hope that anyone who wanted to see the new chapter is subscribed on AO3 lol. Or maybe sees this here! How exciting.

Who's on First (How to Pick a POV Character)

Got a lovely question on curiouscat about how I decide which character's POV to write in for fic. One of my favorite kinds of question is the kind that makes me explain what is usually a gut check, so let's figure this one out together, haha, because an easy answer doesn't immediately come to mind.

Before I actually answer, I'll clarify that I can think of three different categories of fic re: POV deciding. First: stories where the story is About One Character (e.g. Emma AU was always going to be from Hyunjin's POV! He's Emma!). Those are easy. Second: stories where I just end up using multiple POVs anyway (e.g. i blame myself / i blame you, what's mine is yours). Easier because I "don't have to choose," harder because actually you're just doing more choosing of who tells which parts of the story. And third, which I think speak more to the question: ship stories where it could easily be from either POV because the plot doesn't hinge specifically on one character's arc. I'm mostly going to be discussing the third kind, with splashes of the other two tossed in for style points.

So to frame the conversation: what does POV do?Read more... )

Process Meta: Revisions (Part 1: Structure)

I am preemptively calling this a first part, because I'm long-winded and this is a massive topic! But Honey asked some specific questions about the revision process and it's definitely been on my mind lately as I try to get better at it and write longer and more plot-heavy works, so let's take a look at revision for structure and how I tend to do it!

Process Meta: Starting a Story

I'm going to level with you before I start this post: I'm not a great person to answer this question because my mind is like a tiny unhinged tornado at all times and I only sometimes try to corral it. Usually I just kind of let it do its thing.

Process Meta: Characterizing Across Universes

Welcome to this exciting post about characterization!

This is how I frame characterizing, as an author who considers themself to write very character-driven stories. Plot is all about what it does for the people in the stories I write, rather than the characters serving the plot (or the setting driving things, etc). It is not better or worse than any other way to write a story, it's just what works for me and the style I've developed over the last eleven ish years of publishing fic (yeehaw!).
