if you can't beat 'em join 'em: mbti in kpop and meta on personality

This is my third time writing this post because I keep forgetting that dw's autosave feature is useless and there is no manual draft feature. I really thought I saved my second attempt somewhere but can't find it (maybe someday I will!) so forgive me if this is short/messy but I think I need to get it all out in one go if I want any hope of finishing it and successfully getting it up.

This post is the first in a theoretical series where I take a personality indicator (in this case MBTI!), find kpop idols who have the same type as I do, and utilize it as a space to reflect on personality tests and why they're compelling, how we utilize them to understand one another, and my own relationship with my alleged personality types.

I am an ENFP :') [crowd cheers] [confetti cannons fire]. I have taken the Myers-Briggs many many times, including having it assigned in multiple grad school classes for reasons, and consistently test very strongly in all four categories as Extraverted, Intuitive, Feeling, and Perceptive. The ENFP type is colloquially referred to as The Campaigner, and is defined by a few core traits: idealism, curiosity, being easy-going/laid-back, social agility, harmony-seeking, disorganization, and optimism (sometimes to a fault). If some of this also sounds like ADHD to you, allow me to +1 that. Pick your poison, I guess!

Important to this particular post are some ENFP points related to friendships and career, which I'll try to summarize quickly. ENFPs:
  • are warm and enthusiastic, and pride themselves in drawing in a diverse social circle.
  • are highly susceptible to feeling lonely even within a healthy social life.
  • long for deep, meaningful relationships that they hope will last forever.
  • choose careers predominantly in one of two categories: helping, and entertaining.
  • prioritize jobs that will provide regular challenges and test their talents and abilities.
  • avoid like the plague any job where each day is the same.
You see how this is kind of the perfect storm for a kpop idol in a group? It's also a perfect storm for [redacted career that I am in], which was fun to reflect on as a sort of bizarre mirror world of idoldom. Super different, and yet some of the underlying reasons for keeping on with keeping on can look the same under the right light.

To me, the center of the ENFP personality is an untragic iteration of one of the most human things we can ask, which is: If I pour myself out, will I be received with love? I think of ENFPs as people with overflow, or spillage. So many feelings and so much world to put them in. A keen awareness that it is always possible for something extraordinary to happen. At my very best, this certainty that there is more than mundanity moves through me too. What a gift then, as an idol, to step into a spotlight and feel.

My case studies for this post are two 5th gen boygroup guys and a BTS member. I am so sorry to anyone who is not in this space with me. If Seventeen or Stray Kids had any convincing ENFPs I would pull them too, but the Verkwan confusion made svt moot to me and skz have not a Campaigner among them. Fun fact, I came across so many ENFJs in my hunting for this post! They are everywhere. Unfortunately for them I have never successfully used a day planner for longer than a few months at a time so I cannot bring them into this sacred space.

Let's just start with Kim Namjoon, right? Talk about idealism and responsibility and dreaming of bigger and reaching it. Talk about seeing threads of connection between people like physical bonds, or ropes, or scaffolding, or sparkles. I can list a dozen songs he's written that align perfectly with this perspective on life, but I can't help but center Trivia: Love. There is something so ENFP about a song like that on a global stadium tour. I think too about leadership. ENFP is The Campaigner! A natural leader, good at smoothing out conflict, intensely devoted to a team or mission, purpose-driven and focused. The idea person who doesn't need all the details straightened out to be able to show up whole-heartedly and decisively. The nature-loving artist with a messy bedroom! The brilliant creative with a process that is impossible to truly explain to another person! The blueprint, in many ways, of what happens when you pick a job because there's no end to how much you can pour in, and what it means to find yourself empty and regroup. I love that these days he's angry sometimes. I think he's learning that he doesn't have to earn anger for it to be true and fair and real.

And if we're talking leaders I feel compelled to include Myung Jaehyun, the ENFP who inspired this post in the first place. Yes I got into Boynextdoor like a month ago. Yes I'm already here emotionally. I'm not sure this guy could be more stereotypically an ENFP if he tried. He is the extrovert to end all extroverts, loud and bright and filling every room he's in with raw vibrant charisma. He is imaginative and goofy, falling into role-plays and hypotheticals and thinking often about what he understands of other people. He is emotional, quick to both laughter and tears, incapable to the point of near comedy of hiding what he's feeling at any given moment. And he is 100% inside of every moment he's in. The joke is you can tell a P-type from a J-type based on the state of their bedroom and itinerary. Jaehyun showed us in a reality show that he sleeps more or less with all of his belongings because of how much work he does from his bed. And that is so valid. He is a leader in the sense that the energy in a room bends toward him. Thankfully his members seem used to managing his excitement.

My last ENFP for today's post is ZB1's Kim Gyuvin. He and I have a storied history. I was rooting pretty intensely against him on Boys Planet (sorry king) but he has utterly won me over, not necessarily as an idol but as a guy who sometimes reminds me of me. Sorry to all the Gyuvin haters in the crowd but the video he released where he'd taken 45+ minutes of footage out the window of a Japanese train and edited it with a voiceover and music so fans could listen while working or studying and have some peaceful company landed him square in the middle of my heart. He wants to do everything! He treats people he met five seconds ago as his best friends! He sees wants pursues gets. And I think that is beautiful. He's soaking in every moment of this temporary group and I am wishing him many good times and a continuation to this flexibility that seems like is keeping him going.

None of these guys are exactly me, obviously, but it's fun to find myself in shades of their overlap. The intense desire for and pursuit of connections with people. The idealism that often leads me to act without pausing to wonder if I'm capable. At the center of this pesonality type is the unshakable belief that anything is possible! But there's a dark side here too. Abandonment of the self, overextending, marching ahead without a plan and hinging upon the stubborn belief that everything will be fine. It isn't always! That's worth remembering. But I'd never trade for cautiousness.

If you have it in you as a reply I would love love love to know what your MBTI is, whether you relate to it, and even if there's an idol (or three??) with the same type that you do or don't feel shares major personality indicators with you. That is all for today. We made it!

this is so interesting! I can't believe you had to write this three times. I would just have given up. thank you for soldiering on.

the only idol of the three that I know is namjoon. I can the vibe, though - the idealism and deep thinker vibes, the warmth and gentle sociability, but also the...chaos lol. just an aura of disorganisation. sorry to say this but namjoon would also get his draft post deleted twice.

(also tangent but "the Verkwan confusion made svt moot to me" made me laugh)

I can see some aspects of myself reflected here to - I am an INFJ, so I think we share that idealism? but perhaps in a more inward-looking and structured way. there are apparently three members of svt who are INFJs: wonwoo, woozi and minghao. I can definitely see the similarities there, though I always have my doubts about the accuracy of the tests that these idols take. but these three are pretty "stereotypical" INFJs so I wouldn't be surprised. (wonwoo is the svt member I am the most attracted to, idk what to do with that information...)

the INFJ that I feel like I personally relate to the most is solar from mamamoo. I think there's a tendency for people to assume that Is are very quiet and reserved, but I am not and solar is also absolutely not. but there is an introspection and strong tendency to self-reflection, alongside a real prioritisation of people and relationships, that I really see reflected between her and myself. and she's my mmm bias too!

anyway these are just my rambling thoughts inspired by your insights! thank you for sharing as always <3

Fascinating. I think I've only taken Myers-Briggs once a few years ago and (to no one's surprise) I was very strongly on I, N and J but almost completely in the middle between T and F, and when you looked at the detail on that it's because I was very strongly in the Questioning facet and also very strongly in the Accepting facet. So the test results assigned 'Questioning INFJ' to me which I thought was funny. I honestly don't pay much attention to Idols' types, but I went looking at Stray Kids' as it's my main group now. Interestingly, Bang Chan who is possibly my main bias is ENFJ so like the extrovert version of me. Maybe that explains something...

If you ever get a chance to do Insights profile (based on Jung's typology) would recommend as that was quite interesting as well.
